Choose a thinking level
The thinking level controls how deeply a model reasons before answering. It appears only when the model supports reasoning and reasoning is enabled for it; different models may offer different levels.
Where to choose it
Section titled “Where to choose it”Choose the same setting in three places: at the bottom of the composer’s model picker, below the model in the new-session dialog, and under Role editor → Thinking. Only levels supported by the current model are listed; if Reasoning is off for the provider/model, the choice does not appear.
A change in a session applies to the next turn. Models cannot be switched while running, and the thinking controls are disabled with the model picker.
What the levels mean
Section titled “What the levels mean”| Level | Meaning |
|---|---|
| off | No thinking |
| minimal | Barely any |
| low | Light |
| medium | Balanced; enough for everyday edits |
| high | Deep |
| xhigh | Deeper |
| max | Maximum. Slower, and uses more of your quota |
When levels are unknown
Section titled “When levels are unknown”If a model has no level catalog, the UI marks the choice as Inferred or Fallback: inferred means it was estimated from a model in the same catalog, fallback means the model was not in the catalog and a generic set was used. Hover the badge for the exact basis.
